Why Choose Flame Retardant?

Flame retardant textiles can be used in bedding, curtains, and other soft furnishings. Usually treated with a flame retardant chemical, the fabric will self-extinguish after catching alight which means that those living in healthcare environments, and those who are less mobile, have ample time to evacuate the premises.

The National Association for Safety and Health in Care Services recently published a good practice guide which outlines a number of recommendations for improved fire safety in care homes. Current guidelines state a care home should be evacuated in two and a half minutes which the report says may not be likely in a setting with varying mobility of residents and fluctuating numbers of staff.

The report states: “It is essential that protective measures can hold back fire and smoke for a suitable length of time for the evacuation strategy to be fully implemented.”

In order to meet fire safety risk assessments and to protect the safety of the residents, flame retardant fabrics are an easy and cost-effective way to protect the lives of both residents and staff should a fire break out meaning it’s never been a better time to invest in the high quality and hard-wearing products.
